Mirrored vanity trays, vintage and modern

A mirrored tray doubles everything on it: perfume glows, a candle sparkles, a small collection looks bigger. The catch is the silver backing, which does not like water at the edges.

Short answer

Mirrored trays are best for perfume and jewelry on a dresser or the dry end of a vanity. Keep them away from the faucet: moisture that reaches the silvering at the edges causes black edges that cannot be cleaned off. To clean one, spray the cloth, not the tray, and dry the rim.

Why mirrored trays need care

A mirror is glass with a thin reflective silver layer and protective coatings on the back. Civic Screens explains that when those back layers are compromised, moisture reaches the silver and it oxidizes, starting at the edges. Merry Maids advises applying cleaner to the cloth so liquid does not run to the edges. Once the black creep starts, cleaning will not remove it.

How to clean a mirrored tray

  1. Clear it

Lift everything off so you can reach the edges and corners.

  2. Dust

A dry microfiber cloth first, so grit does not scratch the glass.

  3. Spray the cloth, not the tray

A little gentle glass cleaner on the cloth keeps liquid from running into the edges.

  4. Buff and dry the rim

Finish with a dry cloth, paying attention to the frame and edges.

Questions people ask

Why are the edges of my mirrored tray turning black?

That is desilvering, sometimes called edge creep. When the protective layers on the back of the mirror are compromised, moisture reaches the silver coating and it oxidizes. Cleaner sprayed directly on the glass that runs to the edges is a common cause. It cannot be cleaned off because it is under the glass.

How do I clean a mirrored tray?

Lift everything off, spray a little glass cleaner onto a microfiber cloth rather than the tray, wipe, and buff dry, paying attention to the edges. Some mirror makers warn against heavy ammonia cleaners on the backing and edges, so choose a gentle one.

What is a vintage vanity tray?

Usually a mirrored tray with an ornate gilt or brass frame, often oval with handles or small feet, in the style of mid-century dressing tables. They are sold both as true vintage pieces and as reproductions, and suit perfume and jewelry.

Can I use a mirrored tray in a steamy bathroom?

You can, but expect to care for it. Ventilate the room, keep it away from splashes, and do not leave wet bottles on it. Exhaust fans during and after showers are a common recommendation for mirrors in general.
